The World’s Largest Road Hockey Fundraiser Coming to Vaughan This Fall.

SmartVMC, the new city centres in the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, to host the 10th annual Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer, Fuelled by Longo’s.

October 07, 2021 (Vaughan, ON) — The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation announced today that it has partnered with SmartCentres REIT (“SmartCentres”) and Tourism Vaughan to host its premiere hockey fundraiser, Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer, in Vaughan.  The tournament will be hosted on Saturday, October 30 at the SmartVMC, SmartCentres’ flagship development in the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

As an Official Partner of the event, SmartCentres has generously donated use of their venue. Tourism Vaughan, who spearheaded the community’s effort to bring the popular tournament to Vaughan, brought together local businesses and organizations to get behind the charitable fundraiser. Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer has raised $24 million over the past 10 years in support of breakthrough research at Canada’s largest comprehensive cancer centre, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

“We are tremendously grateful to Tourism Vaughan and SmartCentres, who have stepped up in a big way in support of Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer,” said Dr. Miyo Yamashita, President & CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. “During these unprecedented challenging times, they have opened their doors to us and have offered a safe and welcoming venue for our enthusiastic participants, whose support is critical in enabling transformational cancer research and care at The Princess Margaret”.

For Tourism Vaughan, hosting such a prominent event will revitalize the community after a difficult pandemic year. “The City of Vaughan is pleased to welcome Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer to the heart of our emerging downtown core,” said the Honourable Maurizio Bevilacqua, Mayor of the City of Vaughan. “We have a proud hockey tradition in Vaughan that has become more than just a favourite pastime; it’s a part of our city’s cultural identity. Hosting the tournament in Vaughan will support a strong recovery for our local tourism sector while raising funds for an important and meaningful cause. As we continue to adhere to all provincial health and safety guidelines, the community is invited to take part in this fun event and help support ground-breaking progress in cancer research and care across Canada.”

This year’s event will see 110 teams and 1,200 participants come together with the shared vision of Conquering Cancer in our Lifetime.  Teams are made up of rookies, seasoned veterans and prominent celebrities, such as Maple Leafs’ legend Wendel Clark, Tragically Hip guitarist Paul Langlois, and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee and 4-time Olympic Champion, Jayna Hefford. All attendees will require proof of double vaccination to gain entry to the event site.
