York Region welcomes historic federal and provincial investment in broadband

Creating access to broadband services is an important Smart City infrastructure that helps prepare our city for future technology by providing the foundation of connectivity. YorkNet is a York Region-owned corporation that plans, builds, operates, manages and maintains a high-speed, dark-fibre network across the Region. It is focused on maintaining and expanding the Region’s telecom network to support economic development and innovation in York Region, and to provide cost-effective and open-access fibre connectivity for the Region.

On Thursday, March 2, 2023, the Governments of Canada and Ontario announced more than $48 million in federal and provincial funding to bring high-speed Internet access to underserved areas of York Region.  This funding is part of a continued commitment by all levels of government to bring reliable, high-speed Internet to homes and businesses across Canada, Ontario, York Region and Vaughan. The investment will be allocated to a broadband infrastructure project through the Universal Broadband Fund (UBF) that will see high-speed Internet brought to more than 3,800 underserved homes across the Region.
